As an island, Burano is accessible only by water. You can take Vaporetto line 12 from Fondamente Nove “A” (just 20 minutes from our hotel) and reach the island in about 40 minutes. Alternatively, you can join a boat tour to get there.
The Charm of Burano
Burano is world-renowned for its vibrant and colorful houses. Historically, the bright colors served a practical purpose. When fishing was the island’s primary industry, fishermen painted their homes in vivid colors to find their way back through the foggy lagoon.
Today, while the necessity has faded, the tradition of brightly colored homes remains a cherished part of Burano’s identity.
WHAT TO SEE ON BURANO ISLAND: OUR GUIDE
Despite its small size, Burano offers plenty to see beyond its colorful houses. One of its claims to fame is the exquisite lace made by local artisans, a tradition dating back to the 16th century. The Lace Museum, located on the island, showcases these intricate works and is a must-visit.
Another notable attraction is Burano’s leaning bell tower, constructed in the 17th century. For the best view of this tilting structure, head to the Terranova marble bridge. Though it appears to be on the verge of falling, the tower is perfectly stable. Nearby, you can also visit the Church of St. Martino.
During your exploration of Burano, make sure to visit Pescheria Vecia, the old fish market, which is a great spot to watch the sunset.
Lastly, don’t miss Piazza Galuppi, the island’s only square. Here, you can see an authentic Istrian water well dating back to 1588.
